The congress of the Mexican State of Tabasco restricted surrogacy for foreigners.
Providing services of surrogate motherhood for gay couples and foreigners was banned in Mexico.
The Tabasco State is the only predominantly Catholic of the country that permits surrogacy, but last week, with 21 votes in favor and 9 against, the congress voted for limiting the respective services only for Mexican couples. The intended parents must provide evidence of woman’s (aged between 25 and 40 years) inability to carry out a pregnancy.
One of the voters for the restrictions justifies her choice calling these services “a new form of exploitation of women and trafficking.”
So far, Mexico was a popular destination for the services of surrogate motherhood and artificial fertilization for gay and lesbian couples from the United States.
Let us recall that last year surrogacy for foreigners was banned in India, Thailand and Nepal.
